I LOVE this hat! Discovered in a fabulous Peddler’s Mall in Louisville, Kentucky, this gorgeous hat called to me from afar.
The construction is a tightly woven, wide-brim straw hat that was heavily starched and shaped into a flat-topped crown and dipped-edge brim. The starch created a very sturdy, firm foundation.
Covering the outer and inner hat is a stunningly gorgeous brocade fabric with a pattern embroidered in shiny gold, copper, and teal threads. A wide, black satin sash surrounds the crown and is fashioned into a huge black rose at the front.
I lined the inside of the crown with a soft, creamy cotton and added a trim of black tulle lace to frame the face. Black ribbon ties were added to secure under the chin.
This hat is perfectly circular and measures 14” brim-to-brim. The crown is 3.5” deep and measures 22” around. The stiffness of the head opening allows minimal give for a larger head.
