My interest in the Regency Era of England began with the classic novels by Jane Austen. In 2006, shortly after seeing the 2005 cinema version of “Pride and Prejudice” starring Kiera Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen, I began writing fan fiction. My debut novel — Mr. and Mrs. Fitzwilliam Darcy: Two Shall Become One — was publishing in February 2009. This novel launched The Darcy Saga, my ten-volume sequel series. My passion for the Regency grew as I steadily researched every aspect of the period, including the garments. As a longtime member of the Jane Austen Society of North America and The Beau Monde Chapter of the Romance Writers of America, I have attended dozens of period-themed events in the past decade and LOVE dressing in period clothing. I’ve accumulated a bursting closet of gowns and accessories, but until recently never tried my hand at sewing anything myself. This changed in May of 2018 when, on a whim, I decided to make bonnets for myself and my two daughters to wear at the Greater Louisville JASNA Region’s annual Jane Austen Festival in July. To my amazement, I discovered an untapped “talent” and unbeknownst enthusiasm: I LOVE making bonnets and hats!
Read the finer details of how that adventure came to be and evolved on my debut blog post: Welcome to A Lady Bonnet Boutique!
What began as a mini-project to create three basic hats has evolved into a new passion. I am unsure how far this newfound desire will lead me, or how it will fit in with my writing, but for the present I am letting inspiration flow and enjoying every minute of the ride.
